Semester abroad in Barcelona: focusing on audiovisual design and filmmaking

New perspectives through cultural and creative exchange

For six months, I had the opportunity to live and study in Barcelona as part of my exchange semester at ESDi. This time allowed me to broaden my creative horizon by exploring courses beyond interaction design — including graphic design and especially filmmaking.

One of the most enriching aspects of the experience was collaborating with designers from all over the world. Through international project teams, we exchanged ideas and methods, deepening our understanding of how design is approached across different cultures and disciplines.

Highlight: storytelling and visual composition in motion

A key highlight was the creation of two short films, especially the project “The Joker – Promotional Cut.”
We were asked to select a scene from the film Joker and recreate it shot-by-shot — but with a twist: the final result had to function as a promotional video.

In our version, the Joker runs down a dimly lit hallway, finds comfort in the space, and begins to dance expressively. The narrative gradually shifts focus to his Dr. Martens shoes, subtly transforming the scene into a product-centered promotion — while preserving the cinematic style and emotional depth of the original.

Working with people from so many different cultures showed me that design isn’t just a process — it’s a language that adapts, evolves, and connects.

💭 Reflection

This semester helped me to develop a more cinematic eye for storytelling, learn new creative tools, and collaborate across disciplines and cultures. It challenged me to communicate design not only through structure and logic, but also through emotion, rhythm, and visual narrative. Experiences like this sharpen not only creative thinking, but also adaptability, intercultural communication, and the ability to work in diverse teams — essential skills in any international and innovation-driven environment.
